Its comforting to see an alumni from my university make it in the games industry even if they did also have to take further courses after they attended. In truth I am already considering further courses I might take after this one, where I might want to go.
McDonald imparted a lot of information that gave me a lot to think about. First of all its interesting that the studio he works for is slowly making the transition to Blender: as a free program I've known about it for a while but haven't used it. He also talked about the importance of showing off your best work in your portfolio, which is something I'm striving to expand on, and how volunteering can lead to connections into the industry. I am currently volunteering as a QA tester on a project and its exciting to see that if I do a good job that will be taken into account.
He also imparted some important knowledge on what too look for in a company; as more and more studios get exposed for sub par working condition and crunches become more common its become a concern of mine to find somewhere that treats its workers right. Some red flags we were told to look out for was paid overtime, if the interview tasks are paid and to look into a companies history on sites like glass door to see how happy people are working there.
